New "Alien" movie confirmed!

So the guy who gave us District 9 (an okay movie) and Elysium (a pile of crap) and now this goofy looking Chappie movie will be helming a brand new Alien movie. I hope to God Sigourney Weaver isn't in this one as there really is no point in having her show up. The timeline doesn't support Ripley making an appearance and it would just be gratuitous of them to shoehorn her into the movie.

At any rate, I'll say it first: Aw crap!

So,wonder when they will bring the Predators into the PROMETHEUS series?

You just KNOW someone has already put that idea on the table with storyboards and everything

Probably found a way to work in Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover too...

I still want to know how Prometheus 2 got greenlit. It was only marginally profitable and the extremely poor script has been the topic of comedy for a couple of years now, which means any sequel will have to overcome bad word of mouth right off the bat.

Ridley Scott has a lot of pull apparently. And the Wiki on it claims that it made a profit, the budget being $120 - 130 million and the box office coming in at 403.4 million. Two-thirds of that was foreign receipts, which just goes to prove that there are a lot of idiots beyond our shores.

(I didn't bother checking what was spent on marketing and if that was calculated separate from the production budget, so I don't know how much that $403 number reflects the actual cost of the movie.)

*I'm unable to link the Wiki page directly for some odd reason. Sorry.

Usually the rule of thumb is to double the budget to account for marketing and the theater chain shares of revenue. With Prometheus that may be a bit short because it was more heavily promoted and also such a high portion of the revenue was foreign (where the studio gets less of the theater proceeds than domestic). So with $130 million base budget it probably need to hit 290-300 million to get in the black. Hence my remark about marginal profitability. Add in that any sequel will go in under a cloud from the poor reviews of the original and I am dubious about the greenlight.

The Prometheus story is not going anywhere. There was only a simplistic and implausible plot to follow (vaguely). It isnt interesting. Where is he trying to go with it?

My impression is that Ridley Scott doesn't know where Prometheus is going. Or at the very least he's second guessing things now. I believe he was truly shocked by the response from the audience in that they were expecting more of an Alien connection. So now he's probably scrambling to add more Alien stuff to the next movie. Personally I don't think this approach will work as it's too "patchwork quilt", which usually just ends up being confusing.

The movie immediately was doomed as soon as they allowed Damon Lindelof to pen the script...

I'm not sure who is writing Prometheus 2. Hopefully not DL.

This is funny. Apparently Blomkamp has totally discarded both Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection in his new timeline:

As it should be. :) Alien 3 was tragic to the franchise. It killed off Newt and Hicks. And 4 was a complete joke. I hope they do not call it Alien 5 because they would mean they are still counting Alien 3 and 4 (even if ignoring them). Also, I am a bit confused by that article...are they bringing Ripley back too?

I hope there just ISN'T a Prometheus 2! I am completely and thoroughly positive that I do not want to see any more of the Prometheus story. If Ridley Scott thought he was creating suspense with the alien ship taking off with that female character played by Noomi Rapace (can't even remember her character name!) to some unknown place, he is wrong. I couldn't care less where they went. And I did not find the creature or the Engineers interesting. I hope they just dump it.

I agree with OM1 on this. Alien 3 is where the story went tragically off the rails. And Alien Resurrection made it even worse. Neither of those movies should have been made. (I shudder when I think of AR it was that bad. Horrible characters I didn't give a crap about. Terrible, just terrible.)

I never said either was any good. It just struck me as funny that he decided to in essence forget they ever were made.

I think most fans tend to agree that 3 and 4 were bad and are disposable.

3 was watchable, but it was utterly disconnected from 1 and 2. It seemed that AR was just thrown together over beers and a bong hit. Oh, and honey roasted nuts by the handful. The visuals were off, the characters were ridiculous and the ending was horrendous. I might try and choke it down to remind me of that, since I have it in my collection still.

To me #3 completed negated the first two movies, especially the second one, that was its biggest sin.

It almost felt like the setup of a TV series to me. The writing was so off, there was this ensemble thing going on, then they went wonkers with it right off the bat. Like you said, it should never have been made.

The last Alien movie took place 200 years after Alien 3 and had Ripley appear as a clone.

Yep, and its name was not even really Ripley, it was Ripley 8. Plus, she was a hybrid, not a clone. :). They were supposedly playing around with recombinant human/alien DNA, and the alien Queen gave vaginal birth. It was laughable. The "baby" being sucked out of the hole in the window was bordering on comical.
