Marvel's Daredevil

So has anyone here checked out this show yet?

I bingewatched it in about 1 1/2 days and I thought it was great. Even though I've never read the comics I imagine that this does it more justice than that crappy Ben Affleck movie. At least it was a significant step up in terms writing and acting. It also felt quite different from the rest of the Marvel stuff in terms of the violence shown on screen.

The highlight of the whole thing for me was really Vincent D'Onofrio's portrayal of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin which brought a lot of emotional depth to the character. Sometimes all his talk of only wanting to help his city fell a bit flat, but considering that he was pretty delusional over the results of what he was doing I guess that's unavoidable. I felt his relationship with Vanessa fell a bit flat but she has the potential to develop into a good antagonist for DD in the (hopefully forthcoming) second season now when Fisk is in jail.

Well I'm completely stumped by that. Considering that Daredevil is a bit of known entity for those who've read the comic books or have seen the previous movie and they've got the Marvel name going for them, Netflix should really be advertising this show more. It could potentially bring in a few subscribers here and there.

I've seen it advertised on many different sites as well as on TV, and I'm one who pays the least amount of attention to advertising as possible. I have Netflix but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

By far one of the best things about this show is the fights. I've always been unimpressed with how fights have been choreographed in other Marvel stuff and this show have really stepped up and shown how you can have that raw feel to all the fight scenes and still be a superhero show. This one-shot scene is actually a great example.

I watched the first episode last night. It was okay, but I'll reserve judgement until later. I won't be binge watching it though.

This is how I wish Marvel's movie universe would be with some of their solo stories. But almost all of their movies have to be this light, fluffy, marshmallow, kid-oriented, toy-selling venture cause of them being Disney produced. I want to root for the characters and their journey. I want to be engrossed in their tale. Not taken out of it due to constant comedy and drama having its legs cut out from underneath.

Daredevil got a lot of the drama right. I could root for Matt and his cause. The dramatic moments weren't undercut by a joke or quip here and there. They really did this show nicely. Fisk is a good villain who has good fleshing out. Marvel is lacking in villains due to their villain mortality rate in MCU, kid-friendly prerequisite, and not being Loki. It was a nice change to have a villain who was truly depicted as a villain; they even showed his descent into being the villain.

There were some weaknesses though. Matt does too much acrobatics and doesn't seem to try to hone his skills or refine them. The ending episode felt all too rushed given the pacing of what came before. His suit at the end seems a bit clunky and less than his initial suit. They shouldn't have killed off Ben due to Ben's importance in the comics and further storylines. Fisk's girl is too easily taken into Fisk. Fisk became this emotional, overly excited little teenager when they had established him as this crime boss who has managed to keep himself hidden for a long time. It was kind of disappointing to see how he became a emo teen sometimes. I like that they showed a lot of things from the comics here and there. They're really going out of their way to incorporate story elements cleanly from the comics as opposed to how they're being overly liberal with changes in the movies.

With all that said, I doubt Daredevil is gonna show up in the movies cause of the more dark/adult nature of Daredevil and Disney-mandated tone with Marvel movies. Hell, Daredevil and Winter Soldier are Marvel's most praised entities besides Guardians. That should tell them something.

One thing I hate with these Netflix shows is that once I start watching them I just can't stop. It's less than 48 hours after all 13 episodes were released and I just finished the last one.

But I have to say that I didn't expect that season 2 would top the last one, but it did. With the inclusion of The Punisher, Elektra and The Hand this season feels so much bigger in every way. John Bernthal was a perfect pick for playing Frank Castle and one of the real highlights of the season, along with Élodie Yung as Elektra who I was pleasantly surprised by. One small negative point though is that with so many different things going on in the season things felt a slight bit disjointed at times, but fortunately enough not to such a degree that it took away much from my enjoyment of the show.

I just wanna add that I LOVE THIS SHOW!

I love the element of realism in their characters. Unlike movie and comic book superheroes, we actually see Daredevil get exhausted during prolonged fight scenes. They don't make him a tireless fighting machine.


You almost never see this type of realism in any action series or movies.

One thing I'll say is that they should have kept that red suit out of this iteration of the character. I like him better with the rag covering his eyes and head and the street clothes.

Agree with you on everything Bluce. Although I understand that Daredevil would eventually have a need to get some kind of suit that offered more protection, I wish they could make it look a bit less conspicuous and at the very least get rid of the red horns in this version of the character.

But that's just some nitpicks really, this show along with Jessica Jones is one of my definite favourites and probably the best the filmatized or televized superhero genre has to offer at the moment. Now it's time to start the countdown to Luke Cage's release in September and hope that it can maintain the same level of quality.

I have taken a break from Netflix so I had not heard about it. I think that the presence of original material from Disney Group means that Netflix and Disney have hugged and said it was no big deal when Disney snatched everything from them a few years ago.

This is in Kodi so I can watch it without having Netflix. Im gonna watch Into The Ring (01x01) tonight.

I am surprised you had not seen at least one ep yet.

Bit on the fence about that, but I have not watched either in over a year, so the "they were ok" fog has set in. From memory I found the story of Gotham more complex, which certainly covers up for some crap writing sometimes.
DD certainly kicks nine shades of crap out of Gotham for it's fights and realism though.

You need to catch season 2 of DD. I'm pretty sure you'll like it more than the first.

Have to find it somewhere legal first that I could be bothered with. I really liked S1, and our tastes in shows (or at least appreciation of) tend to be similar, so I'll keep an eye out.
DD was one of my comics of choice as a kid-to-late teen, along with Punisher, Thor and Ghost Rider, so I am already predisposed to be generous to it.
