Idiot Nutritionist

My doctor has sent me to a nutritionist who appears to be an idiot.

He's telling me that carbs are the bad guy (like I don't already know that) but tells me I should/can have up to 2 cups of grains a day (i.e. rice), and that I should only be eating turkey, chicken or fish as meat. No "red" meat.

Yes, that's right, no beef, pork, mutton, lamb, etc.

Meanwhile, after telling me that carbs are bad, he tells me to be sure I get my two portions of fruit a day (2 portions equal a whole banana). Fruits are rife with carbs.

I think my code word for all "red" meat will be "chicken".

He is a closet vegetarian. I run into these types all the time when shopping. :) Rice is one of the worst carb sources you can eat as far as grains go, plus the starches. Turkey, chicken and meat are great meat choices, but beef pork, mutton, lamb and venison have more amino acids and other nutrients (yes, from the blood) than they do not have. What is this "nutritionist"'s health and physical appearance look like to you? When confronted by vegetarians who profess to know something about food, I look them up and down and invariably see gaunt bodies, pale and lifeless skin, and a much lower level of energy.

He's not skinny, but did say that "his carb" is rice, as his "wife is Asian".

I lied and said "my carb" was brown rice (I hate brown rice with a fire that burns).

I'm thinking he's also a vegetarian (or damned close to it).

Not the kind of background for a nutritionist, IMO. Most of his practice seems to be aimed at overweight kids, btw.

He is self-justifying his diet because he is used to eating dinner with his wife. It seems to me that this guy is speaking off the cuff using hearsay to support his beliefs. You can see the macros for all the foods he recommends by using Google, and you will see he is way off base. You can stick with the lighter meats as long as you supplement with iron and Omega 6.

Oh, I'll keep eating red meat. I much prefer it to chicken. (Love fish, but it's too damned expensive atm, and I'm not a fan of tilapia).

I never understood the differentiation between beef and poultry when it comes to what's considered "healthy". That's just SAD (Standard American diet) nonsense. There's nothing wrong with eating quality beef, in fact, one could argue it has more benefits in terms of providing heme-iron and other nutrients.

Kind of where I am with that, love.

If we were in a different part of the forum, my response would have been FAR more colorful.

It's kind of sad that we've reached a point in our medical establishment where it behooves the patient to just smile and nod for fear of being labeled a trouble maker for questioning the inane information we're given during consultations like these.

BTW -- where did alcohol end up on this list? Can you drink beer? Wine? Liquor? Any at all? :daniel_new004:

Booze is bad :(

I merely agree with your position, Fk'em.

Oh, in case you were wondering, I decided on chicken and bacon cabonara for dinner with a creamy mushroom, onion and bell pepper sauce with plenty of pepper, but little salt.

Two cups of rice and a banana is roughly about 117g of carbs per day. That's not really a significant amount and totals about 508 calories for the entire day. As long as your total caloric intake is below your BMR (basic metabolic rate - using height/weight/age/sex/activity level), you're losing weight, if that's your goal.

My biggest issue is being spoken to as though I am a child. I'm not.

I'm behaving myself when I speak with this idiot, because I don't want to have to play games with this guy.

I think he's got that "I'm a doctor, so I know more than you" thing going on.

It's common malady amongst medical professionals, from what I've seen.

Losing implies finding.

I never ever want to find it again.
