Harlan Ellison Has Stroke

Harlan Ellison, who I feel very privileged to have met earlier this year (and had a long conversation), suffered a stroke this past Thursday, leaving his right side paralyzed. His wife says that he IS on the mend, however. There doesn't appear to any memory loss or slurring of words as a result of the stroke.

Please think raucous thoughts his way as he works toward recovery. He's someone who doesn't suffer fools gladly and doesn't tolerate stupid or insincerity in the least.

Thought I should pass this on.

He is quite the prolific writer! I am glad he is on the mend...he represents a class of writer which is fast disappearing.

Indeed he does.

He's also a writer who doesn't let people get away with stealing his work, and who has never been loath to file suit (and win when he does) when he feels its warranted.

David Gerrold (yes, that David Gerrold) posted this about a half hour ago:

"Okay, we just had an impromptu convention in Harlan's hospital room. Josh Olson and his beautiful wonderful new wife, Nancy Himmel, plus Mark Evanier, Alan Brennert, and myself. Harlan is in fine spirits. He's doing a lot of physical therapy for his left arm and leg.

From the neck up he's still an irascible old coot, talking a mile a minute and having us all laughing so hard it was amazing. Hospitals aren't supposed to be this much fun. I'm sure the doctors and nurses would be incredibly entertained if they understood half the arcane references.

BTW, the difference between Klingon and Yiddish is that Klingon has vowels.

So, don't panic -- Harlan is still Harlan."
