Can anyone recommend an ad blocking program (free) that will stop those stupid pop up screens and video ads on web pages that are visited? What's the best one for killing all that stupid junk?

Thanks

It depends on how the ads are implemented. The "interstitial" type, like the ones on Forbes.com where they come up before you get to the web page cannot be blocked. The "reveal" types which suddenly open up in the middle of the column you are reading then close, are another type of ad which cannot be blocked (but the content can).

Need more information...can you post a link to one of the offending sites?

The "reveal" type ads that pop open in the middle of an article are annoying as hell. So are the pop up ads whenever my cursor comes near the BACK button.

Alas, there is no solution for those types of ads...yet. They trick you by not revealing the player and not allowing you to close the ad before it has played. The type of ad you described with going near the back button is triggered by the mouse passing over a region on the page purposely put there near the back button. The solution is to use the Backstace key instead of the back button. That shortcut is the same for "Back" in every web browser. Hope this helps:

As far as I know, there is no solution for the reveal type ads within article copy. :(

Nah...that would be Bluce, I think? :) I have been asked to solve this issue before, and no solution yet. Banner ads and header and footer ads are a piece of cake these days. Interstitials cannot be blocked, but they can usually be closed. The reveal ads within article copy technically do not exist until they are revealed and you are already on the page. :(

Ads overall are annoying. I've observed that Adblock Plus at least kills the ones that interfere with navigation and such.

Disable flash. You can choose when you want to activate adobe flash things. I think most of the ads you're talking about uses flash? They just won't activate until you tell it to. But then you face the hassle of clicking to activate flash on certain things and not. I'm not quite sure on how you could save the preferences of things you want to remember...Maybe the fellas above can help you.

I just have my flash disabled in general and only use it when I want to use it. Adblock plus also allows you to hone in on specific sites that you don't want to pop up and put ads in your face. You can block those specific sites I think.
