Arthur Clarke’s ‘3001: The Final Odyssey’ Set As Syfy Miniseries From Scott Free

Forty six years after the release of Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking 2001: A Space Odyssey, based on the opening novel in Arthur C. Clarke’s Odyssey series, the final book in the series is getting a screen adaptation. Syfy has put in development 3001: The Final Odyssey, a miniseries based on the fourth and final Odyssey book. The deal comes on the heels of Syfy recently greenlighting a miniseries adaptation of another Clarke classic, Childhood’s End.

SyFy you say? So that means there will be sharks in it, right?

It sounds to me like Syfy has hired consultants to tell them what real science fiction is. Not sure if you are aware of it, but Bonnie Hammer came from the uber-drama world. She is a businesswoman, not a science fiction fan. Everyone around her at Syfy are marketing, business and accounting gurus, not science fiction fans. This contrasts sharply with the original SciFi Channel folks who were all science fiction fans, and were the reason for the existence of a cable channnel devoted to us. Syfy represents the same old thing we see when "corporate mentality" kicks in to a once cool company. Everything becomes scripted and severely organized and re-evaluated to the point where you end up with a product designed to sell, not to appeal. The first thing the channel did when they changed from Scifi Channel to the diseased Syfy channel was to package and expand the WWE into the foundation of the Syfy lineup so they could offset dropping advertising revenue...at the time. It worked, but now the long term is catching up to them as the WWE wanes in popularity and the disgruntled science fiction fans have left in droves.

There is some great science fiction on cable, but rarely is it on Syfy.

It's an excellent book - what syfy (AKA syfyllis) will make of it is rather scary......

every movie adapted for the books--except 2001--were good movies but they still fell short of the books. And those were done by better ppl then who is populating syfy these days, i wouldn't expect much sadly

I *hope* they do a good job with both 3001 & Childhood's end. Do I expect them to? Not really, for the reasons we all know.

And yes, there was a book between 2010 & 3001, "2061", but that was set in space and we know how they avoid anything that needs a budget that can produce a good space show.
My own preference would be for 3001 anyway, 'cause there wasn't really alot of new ground covered in 2061. The explanation for the main character's return on 3001 stretches credibility, but other than that, I rather like that.
