Netflix really did a good job on Bright. Sure, you couldn't ever call it critically acclaimed such as The Shawshank Redemption, but it is entertaining from start to finish. For what it is, it is good. Or at the very least pretty damn decent. Definitely worth a watch. And I'm sure I'll watch it again at some point in the future. Hope they'll make a sequel.

I'm gonna give this a shot eventually. From the previews, it reminds me strongly of Alien Nation with the twist of it having an Orc and a human. I understand it got 11 million viewers in it's first 3 days.

Yeah, the trailer gives me an Alien Nation vibe too. I'll probably catch it this weekend.

It was an allegory on racism. In fact, they stuck it right in your face rather blatantly. When you're done you'll feel like you watched a piece on modern day racism with magic and fairies and elves sprinkled in.

Hype does that, just like Justice League did extremely well on opening day because of false expectations then died on the vine.

Plus Netflix streaming is piss poor when it comes to new offerings so it's not surprising that the people who have that service jump on anything mildly interesting that comes up. I know I've spent too much time searching the Netflix streaming que for anything good; and the new shit they put out is mostly foreign crap and/or bad comedians doing their shtick.

When movies go too deep into social commentary instead of just being entertaining it often ruins the entire experience. Bright should not have been a platform to express political views and I'm surprised Netflix allowed this to be released as-is.

Their original programming has been quite stellar for the most part, especially the Marvel Universe stuff, and is the only reason I have Netflix. Bright seems out of place, like Reed Hastings did Will Smith a favor shoving this square peg into Netflix's round hole.

yes they have definitely gone the way of quantity over quality

the quality issue along with the faster shipping, is why i keep amz prime

their originals are far fewer and tend to be much better then NF's

not that all their stuff is good,it isn't, but they do have some good stuff like sneaky pete and bosch as well as goliath

sadly they are might light on the sci fi front :(

Politics seems to be creeping into all of our media these days. It borders on social programming. :)

Yeah but you can just ignore that and enjoy the movie.

I think writers today just aren't that good at weaving social commentary into their work. Personally I prefer just straight action and adventure that doesn't deliver a message for me to ingest. But if I'm going to be served up a lesson I'd prefer it be done like they did on the original Star Trek. They at least made those lecturing episodes interesting to watch. But the stuff today, it's too heavy handed. I don't need some post-Millenial J.J. Abrams-wannabe wasting my time with his own myopic worldview. I've got enough problems, the last thing I need is to have my entertainment start lecturing me.

If it's subtle, yes you can, but sometimes it's so blatant and heavy handed that you can't ignore it.

*I'm sure I've watched plenty of stuff that's had a sub-textual message that went right over my head. Like most people I want to see the aliens and/or the monsters and I don't really give a crap about the inter-personal problems the humans are having.

If you watched it, you'll find it's the centerpiece and core plot of the entire movie. In fact, they even use the words "racism" and "racist" throughout. You would have to watch the movie with the volume turned off to "just ignore that and enjoy the movie".

It's neither subtle nor is it a subtext. It's the actual plot but with mythical characters.

I watched it all the way though because there was nothing else new to watch. Call it desperation to find something likable in this movie.

Damn, you were absolutely right.. I haven't seen such heavy handed, premixed racist stereotypes since the early 1970s. I found the entire construct of those "cops" offensive because I was raised by a good cop.

Also why does this cop have to live in the ghetto next to gangsters?

These cops were monsters, and the racism subtext was obtuse and lowbrow. It was just offensive and grating and cringeworthy. I could not watch it all the way through. Besides the effects, I have nothing good to say about this film. Sorry.

This movie was a full-on statement of racism disguised as an entertainment flick. I have no idea how Netflix green-lit this with a $90 million budget. Smith must have some well placed friends somewhere.
