So! What books have you been reading?!

I LOVE BOOKS!

I will probably never go for the audible or e-reader versions; i want to hold the book in my hands and not be dependent on a signal to do so

books are 'magical'. to get immersed in them and lose yourself for just a bit of time in the pages is, to me, a great experience.

fortunately, our son shares the same feelings while at the same time, he his also knee deep in the digital world

<he wants to be a bio-medical engineer. work on designing new implants, robotic limbs, etc..so i thought he would have given up on print media a long time ago. nope.>

and

if you haven't already figured it out, i really like our group of ppl here. i like to know more about everyone, i know some are gamers, i know some of your professions, all based on what you have shared

to know, and to be cognizant of these things while posting, these things, i think, makes the whole forum experience deeper and more enjoyable

so, if you'd like to share, i am interested to know what you are readin or have recently read?

maybe give us a bit more to talk about

if not, well then, ok:

I am currently reading a historical biography on Oliver Cromwell and the New Model Army. exciting stuff, I know! :)

I have just recently finished reading STAR WARS, A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW. A canon collection of short stories told in the first person about what those 'side line' characters from the original trilogy and rogue 1 may have been thinking/doing while they witness or were a part of the events in the movies

before that i read VOICES OF THE STARS. A novel on dark age Britain involving druids and other ppl all the while masking that it is actually a story of Arthur. a type of Historical (what can be gleaned from the collections of the stories on the actual historical figures) Myth and nature worship (druidic religion) all set in the frame of post roman Britain and the impending arrival of those Germanic peoples called the "saxons"

so what are you reading?

Good thread. :) I just finished reading the Expanse series of books. The last most recent one is Babylon's Ashes and I will pre-order the next one which comes out in December. The Expanse universe is totally AWESOME. It is far more human-centric than either Star Trek's or Stargate's universes, yet borrows elements from both of those universes (but not Star Wars). This remains science fiction throughout, without any fantasy OR aliens (other than the protomolecule and Miller and others affected).

Unlike you, I went from being a reader of paperbacks and hardcover books to going almost 100% digital. Books that have been read are like gum which has no more flavor and thus is destined to be stacked away somewhere (or stuck under a counter). I no longer have a compulsion to collect things like magazines or books. I don't like audiobooks nearly as much as ebooks though.

don't you ever do a 're-watch' of a series or movie?

that's rhetorical..i know you do :)

so what is so diff about doing a re-read?

books are destined to be re-enjoyed!

Wow, I haven't re-read a fiction book in decades! Reference manuals and scientific journals, yes. Honestly, my absolute favorite format for books is anthologies. :) Science Fiction anthologies containing the writers of the age.

then your preferred method of input is visual (movies, tv ,etc)? otherwise re-watching and re-reading are the same re-absorption of the same material.

Well, not necessarily. :) I am just saying I no longer collect physical books or magazines.

I admit I've been reading some different books of late in part because of work. For example, were it not for work I doubt I would be reading a big tome on C based languages like I currently am :)

I've also been reading Garret Mattingly's "The Armada" and "Gettysburg" by Stephen W Sears.

I've read so many books in my life I've come near to forgetting having read some of them. My nightstand is covered in a pile of books as well as the floor beneath it. I read everything from fiction to nonfiction. The older I get the more ruthless I am when it comes to culling fiction from my reading lists. I have no tolerance for bad fiction writing anymore and have been known to throw away books that egregiously offend my sensibilities.

I like to take advantage of the local "Little Free Libraries" that dot my neighborhood. Sometimes I can find a gem that's worth reading. Admittedly a lot of the books are junk but I just ignore those. (It's sad that women still read romance novels and it's even sadder that most romance novels now involve a single mother looking for a white knight to solve all her bad life decisions.)

we have 4 bookshelves upstairs, mostly filled with books. i have even recently gone through and brought a couple of boxes to the library of stuff i am not that interested in. but still, so many books between my son and i that a just recently put up some shelves for books only down in the basement. with a nice Scandinavian style lounger and lamp next to them :)

and yeah--there is so much bad fiction out there-so many copy cats or thinly veiled copiers of other ppl work. i can't bring myself to read other Tolkien style fiction as everything i have tried is so much like his work. the sci fi stuff i like, though haven't read lately is stuff like BOAT OF A MILLION YEARS and THE SONGS OF A DISTANT EARTH and a few others in the same vein as those

BOAT OF A MILLION YRS is one of my favorites as it incorporates history, sci fi and the characters are immortal--with all of that how can you go wrong? :)

Currently re-reading all of my Agatha Christie books starring Hercule Poroit! Planning on checking out Kevin Brannaugh as Hercule in Murder on the Orient Express! ( I already know how it ends! )
Next maybe Asimov or my Allison Weir biographies.
Um. I refuse to confirm or deny that we have 17 large bookcases in our house!:cool:

I don't envy you rereading the Christie oeuvre. I can understand reading her more well known titles-- once, but some of her lesser known books are real clunkers. I read The Mystery of the Blue Train last year and it was really bad. Christie was phoning it in and it showed. After that I don't have much interest in reading her other stuff, or rereading as the case may be.

*I have read the usual Christie titles like "Nile", "Orient", "And then there were none", etc.
