What do you think our greatest achievement/thing in the world is? For me I think it's Science and well music. Music is by far the most greatest human thing to have ever existed. It's magical, wonderful, powerful, therapeutic and brings joy and happiness to this world. What's not to like about it? Science does the same thing. It cures the pain and suffering and brings all the wonderful hacking the world to get a better understanding.

I don't think it's really fair to consider science as one achievement. And likewise with music.

You might as well say "surviving" is the greatest achievement. Or "slow unintended self annihilation" for that matter. That's not an easy thing to achieve mind you.

Mankind's greatest achievement? I'm gonna have to say the can opener. I know, I know, you were thinking I was gonna say the microwave, ya know, for popcorn and making marshmallow Peeps explode and shit like that. But no matter how you slice it without a can opener you are gonna have a hard time getting your can of Chef Boyardee ravioli open. God knows how they get that shit into the can to begin with. It's probably a conspiracy from the can opener lobby so that they can keep us bent over a barrel when it comes time to chow down on some hangover food, the bastards.

Then again, the invisible fence, ya know, for keeping dogs in the yard, is a pretty clever invention. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but I don't love getting mauled by them if ya know what I mean. Granted, the majority of my canine incisor interaction has been at the paws of police dogs just doing their job, so I can't really blame them. But as they say, once bitten twice shy, blah blah blah.

Of course mention must be made of the invention of candy raisins. Ooh! And also watermelon Jolly Ranchers! Green apple flavor too! And remember when wax whistles were really big? Yeah, that was some cool shit.

Mind you, this is all coming from an American perspective. No doubt you folks in Europe would top your list of greatest inventions with something like the "flesh light" cuz, well, you're European. ;)

I guess I'm going to go for computing as that has been the most important in the past few decades. Though it's really hard because computing as we know it wouldn't have been possible without tons of other achievements, electricity not being the least of those. Are those more important because they came before? Toolmaking is pretty important, because how many other things could not have been achieved without tools.

The global internet would be my pick. It has connected Humanity in a way never before possible. It has shortened the time for transmission of information to seconds instead of days...or months. It has allowed people to exchange info, communicate, teach, govern and even been a witness like in a jury to convict criminals. It's still not what it should be, given that capitalism and advertising is trying to colonize and control it, but the network exists already and reaches everywhere on the globe, even into space.

But how could you measure which inventions or achievements are more important than other ones? If you have a string of them leading from one to the other, or even a tree/root structure, which ones take the cake?

It occurs to me that you could not exclude wars and such from this topic. If certain "victories" hadn't taken place the world and it's achievements might look quite different. Certain people might not have existed or might have taken different directions in their lives. If certain adversities had not existed, there would have been no reason to try to overcome them and therefore certain progress might not have been made.

This TED talk has a part in it regarding this topic. It's quite interesting with the graph. I can't of course judge the accuracy of that data, but if it is correct then it's quite obvious.

Harvested by child slave labor in some Third World shit hole where they are lucky if they live to see their tenth birthday. -- If one can call existing in such conditions "lucky" that is. Enjoy your tea. :teapot:

China is not in as bad a situation as it was in the 1950s.

How about the Internet meme process by which gay pornographic photographs are converted to pieces of political satire?
