Season 7 is where this show begins to fail

Rewatching SG-1 on Comet and have noticed the shift to a complete Star Trek ripoff in the writing as they reached season 7. Of course they hinted at being "derivative" of ST in earlier episodes but by the time they reached "Grace" in season 7 it's like they weren't even trying to cover up how badly they were ripping off ST. It was almost painful to watch the way the writers were raping the ST canon. It was so bad that I now have cancer. Thanks SG-1 writers. You're real pals. :(

Basically the Prometheus was a stand-in for the Enterprise. That's how blatant the writers were with this shit. In retrospect it's quite sad that the writers were so bereft of originality that they had to sodomize not only Roddenberry's corpse but also his legacy. How freakin' lame!

Beam me up Scotty -- I mean Jack -- I mean...wait, what show am I on again???

EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY!!!!!!

It was as obvious as could be. They had everything from phasers to transporters to shields and even the cheesy bridge effects where everyone goes to one side when hit. It was pathetic.

Even though I'm familiar with the show it came as a slap in the face. I guess we tend to forget things as the years go by. Part of me remembered the Star Trek ship-to-surface "beaming" technology but I didn't recall just how blatant they had gotten with all the Star Trek stuff. It really was insulting. I mean, the whole point of the show was that they used the stargate system to travel to different worlds. But by season 7 the stargate was put on the back burner in many ways.

I wrote a whole comment about it when it happened. It's here somewhere. :)

Are you sure Season 7? S7 was mostly about the impending fight with Anubis which culminated in the two parter Lost City, which was one of the best episodes of the series. S8 definitely felt like the show had lost its way. S6 introduced the Prometheus and had some strong episodes like Prometheus, Unnatural Selection and Memento.

Yes, season 7. I looked up the episode "Grace" which was the one that really got me to sit up and take notice. You're right in that they started hinting at it in season 6 but then they did a slow build to outright Star Trek pilferage over the following seasons. It didn't happen all at once which was why it wasn't as noticeable at first. But by season 7 it had gotten fairly blatant in certain episodes.

(I don't mind the development of ships like the Prometheus but the writers got lazy and used the easy way out by cribbing ST memes and themes.)

The Prometheus was the beginning of the end. But when they pulled that deus ex machina with the Asgard knowledge repository and that magical 3D printer of the future on the ship, that was a jump over the shark. The "Asgard beam weapons" and shields was straight up Star Trek. They even were talking about how to modulate the shields and such. It was dumb and it made earth invincible.

Oh, and it was all supposed to be secret? So, the military is on other worlds and in space flying giant interstellar battleships equipped with beam weapons and transporters, but the planetary populous is thought to be too emotionally unstable to know about it for fear of mass hysteria? Mkay.

They just killed off Dr. Frasier so at this point the writing is vacillating between stories using the stargate and stories using ships (more and more). If that isn't bad enough the replicators are soon to return because, well, when you're a writer and you run out of ideas and are lazy you just reuse old shit.

Rinse and repeat. The replicators were such a bad storyline. Especially the one where the Asgard device made one which became many. How dumb were the Asgard to forget to lock out creating certain things in that device? Trek even knew not to allow people to replicate weapons and harmful substances/devices. And replicator Carter? Really? Brad Wright et al can never be allowed near Microsoft Word ever again to write anything. His latest thing, Travelers, is just a rehash of Odyssey 5.

They also have some Teal'c episodes coming up that really slow down the story. There's one about his kid getting married or something like that. Can you say "Yawn"? And there's one where he gets an apartment in town that is really stupid too. Sometimes I can't help but wonder what the writers of this show were smoking.

Now, I don't mind episodes where the budget is being constrained (due to being used for other, more FX heavy episodes) as low-budget episodes can be interesting in terms of character development -- if the writing is up to par. But Teal'c getting an apartment in town, that is an episode??? And who gives a shit about his son getting married on a different planet? Seriously, who gives a shit? What moronic writing. :rolleye0014:

I know, right? Why did they even DO a "Tealc's Son"? I would have been more interested in his wife than the son. Since when do Jaffa have wives anyway? I thought the wives were all Goa'uld property. There were no other married Jaffa. But whatever...I am still not over the Midway episode. Where did all those stargates come from? I can't remember. But they really built a bridge to the Milky Way? REALLY?

I wonder how close we came to getting such thrilling episodes as:

Teal'c moves to the ghetto and develops a crack addiction.

Daniel Jackson gets a job teaching at a community college (but fails to score with any girls taking the course).

Jack O'neill calls in sick due to severe constipation.

Major Carter files a sexual discrimination suit against Gen. Hammond and the SGC.

We don't know the maximum range of a stargate but to create a chain of them connecting two galaxies logically would take several thousand of them at a minimum.

But they're "super stargates" powered by a magic crystal, therefore you just have to dial an eighth or ninth (or tenth) chevron to make that long distance call. ;)

Actually per the SGA premier episode any two ordinary stargates can go intergalactic if the dialing or receiving gate is using a ZPM for additional power. Midway was an episode of SGA where because they lacked the ZPMs they supposedly harvested lots of stargates from uninhabited worlds and made a chain to allow regular gating to Stargate Command from Atlantis.

That's right! That is what pissed me off. :) Supposedly, the gates were placed on worlds which would later be inhabited BECAUSE of the gate there. It was ridiculous, since the gates had to be placed between the two galaxies as well. Just placing them would take decades. It was like Brad had a case of toomuchtoofaritis. With SGU he had to be billions of light years away instead of just perhaps 1000, which made the stones all that more ridiculous. He even turned god into a mysterious radio signal. He pulled Rush out of his butt and made him the Ancient expert, and then turned Daniel into a photographer. This, even though Daniel translated the first Ancient, deciphered the function of their devices, and even ascended!

That sort of stuff is why I could never rewatch SGU. A bigger mystery is why anyone would.

Just finished watching season 7 episode "Resurrection" which was directed by Amanda Tapping. This episode is yet more proof of why women shouldn't be tasked with managing anything more than a stove or a sewing machine. It was beyond cartoonish and downright asinine. The writing and acting was as horrendous as the directing. Truly terrible. No doubt the internet meme of "eye bleach" was created in reaction to this lousy episode, that's how bad it was. This episode did nothing to further the story. All it did was reinforce the fact that everything uber-douche Daniel Jackson touches, dies. This is hardly revelatory to anyone who has seen the show before.

As the season goes on the speed with which this show goes down the shitter increases exponentially it would seem.

I am not sure why SG-1 gets a lot of flack for copying star trek when SGA did the same thing from the very beginning. I agree that they did copy but atleast they made it entertaining which is what the whole idea of the show was...

SGA established the super-advanced tech from the very first episode. A spacefaring city was unique, and Star Trek still has had nothing close to that. Encountering tech from lost civilizations was done in Trek, but the show did not explore humans mastering such tech. SGA was different in it's own right on many levels. SG-1, however, was unique until Season 6-7 where they started to import Treknology. If you look at the Star Trek shows which were going on, you will note that Star Trek Voyager was ended in 2001, and Star Trek Enterprise was cancelled in 2005. Stargate SG-1 Season 7 was 2003, and you can infer that Brad Wright figured he would capture the soon-to-be-orphaned Star Trek fanbase with the addition of Star Treknology. He made the same mistake when he killed SGA to create a new show to capture the soon-to-be-orphaned fanbase of NuBSG, making the show look so much like BSG that it was ridiculous.

The replicators were such a bad storyline

i always hate it when tptb's come up with a "undefeatable" enemy! then all of a sudden-bam, not so tough anymore. we got "deus ex machima" (or some thing) coming down the road on all 8 cylinders!

the replicators were very damned irritating at worst and just filler at best
