This looks like-at the least- a very visually entertaining movie.

Let's hope it is accompanied by a good story as well!

That looks FUN! Does not take itself too seriously, great effects, good level of action vs story. No need to grade it on any intellectual scale. Looks like a great fantasy film!

released a few days ago, anyone see it yet?

It is VERY pretty and the CGI is beautiful, but this smells like a formula movie made for Millenials to watch while eating popcorn. I will probably watch it, but I am not exactly searching it out or salivating for it.

I am sure Joelist and perhaps others here can remember the "Matinee Double Header". This was the time between 2:00pm and 6pm where your parents could give you 5 dollars to go to the theater and you could see the movies (plus perhaps a cartoon or two), have large popcorn, a large soda and large candy AND have enough for pizza later. But the thing about Matinees were the type of movies that played in them:

Kaiju movies like Godzilla. Movies like The Blob, Creature from the Black Lagoon, King Kong, Shirley Temple movies and maybe a comedy or two.

These days, the B-movie genre is now the blockbuster category, where the leads do not need to know how to act or read thoughtful scripts or play luxe parts in Paris or Rome and wear fancy wardrobes. What is Paris compared to Asgard or Pandora or an alien city?

when star wars first came out, my dad dropped me at a theatre in north newark nj and i stayed for about 5 showings. no one asked me to leave..and i got popcorn :)

but yeah--all you say is why i just wait until they hit hbo or a streamer

Saw it.

WHORE-EH-BULL.

Vapid mush. Even the pretty CGI was not enough to carry it. I would rather watch an episode of SGU running backwards and upside down.

The best critics' slams of 'Valerian': 'It really is THAT bad'

"The Razzies don't need to wait until the end of the year to anoint a winner for 2017. The Golden Turkey Awards should be republished with a new cover. Euro-trash is back, while sci-fi will need to lick its wounds for a while."

There is a lot more on that page at the link.

"If there’s one thing Valerian gave me, it’s a newfound appreciation for Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, and even Avatar. Valerian may be bursting with imagination, but it has no soul. The dreadful banter between Valerian and Laureline starts out corny, and becomes downright excruciating as the story progresses."

I can say more about it if/when somebody else has seen it.

PLUSES:

Very very pretty. The CGI was top notch, but not a groundbreaker like Avatar was. Here is a YouTube review that closely describes my experience. I am unfamiliar with the source material.

maybe someone should over dub the audio with a new script/story to match the pretty, pretty pictures? :) now that could be a first==recycled movie

The problem in this thing is that there is no story to follow. I do not know anything about the Valerian source material which is supposed to be some "graphic novel" (WTH is that anyway?). I am unfamiliar with the characters in that story, so this movie looks like a bunch of high schoolers running around the galaxy protecting something. They were "chosen", but you can't for the life of you figure out why these two would be chosen. The male lead is a teen and looks like a kid. It's weird seeing this actor trying to be commanding and manly when he looks so boyish. He is not even as convincing as young Captain Picard in the TNG series:

The Belle of the Ball
LOL sounds like something hubby would like to heckle! He'll spend a saturday watching horrible scifi just to heckle it. recently he watched the last starfighter followed by the core and ended with 2012! :P

The Core is watchable if you're not expecting much. It has it's "fun" moments. Also could be considered delishously cheesy. 2012 is meant to be a blockbuster but I guess it falls short. Though still watchable at the right moments, like your husband discovered. Don't recall much of The Last Starfighter, only saw it once.

The Belle of the Ball
Hubby heckles the horrible special effects or bad science in various movies. Heck the stargate ep Homecoming was better than the core. :P only good spot in the core was stanley tucci...he's hilarious!

I do kinda like the scene where the hacker "kid" puts him in his place.

What ship is this?

The Core is better if you fast forward through all of the scenes not set on the ship...

This thing could lose as much as 150 MILLION dollars. It did not even make 20 million it's opening weekend.

I'm not disagreeing with your statement but I do find it funny that the ship is at the center of the plot. Without it there would be no story really. It's literally the vehicle that carries the plot. (Oddly enough I don't hate "journey to the center of the earth" type stories despite them being laughably implausible. They can be quite fun if done right.)
