The latest "big change" at SYFY--what was it?

while watching the recent season of 12 monkeys i saw the syfy commercial claiming that 'big changes' were coming to the channel in July,I think.

So, what were they? I DVR anything of interest from SYFY through my PSVUE. I no longer even go to the channel unless on recommendation.

From my perspective, SyFy or whatever it's supposed to be has dug itself into a hole. It used to be a channel for Sci-Fi fans. Now it's Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Paranormal and Superheroes, apparently. They seem to think this is one big community, which in a sense it is, but they are gravely mistaken. There is not enough overlap. Fans of any of these four or five or whatever genres won't be able to find enough of their flavour to satisfy their curiosity. It's definitely not a Sci-Fi channel anymore. They should have just changed the name to something completely unrecognizable and forget about it. Let Space do Sci-Fi instead, they seem to know what they're doing.

One thing of notice I did find in that article...

In addition, Syfy also announced that the channel now has the rights to air the "Harry Potter" movies as well as the spin-off "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" in 2018, as well as 14 Marvel movies over the next four years.

Not that I will need SyFy in order to see any of these movies, but it is kinda cool.

even before specialty channels like syfy, you could always find this stereotypical type of clumped marketing in places like bookstores

go on the shelves and find Tolkien and Asimov in the same section--"sci fi/ fantasy"

for syfy to do this only further shows that there are neither true fans of ANY of the genres they are mashing together on the network

-----------------
with those marvel movies-- i wonder if there is some move for disney to either take over or invest in the channel?

if so, that might not be a bad thing.

I don't really care if they have Fantasy and Science Fiction on the channel. What I don't like is mixing the two in movies or TV series. This is one of the arguments I had when another member was here who thought that science fiction and fantasy were pretty much the same thing. Many people will sit and argue that Star Wars is science fiction, when it is 100% fantasy with NO science in it whatsoever. They can successfully argue that the Star Trek reboot movies are fantasy, and they would be correct. 100% fantasy and NO science in them whatsoever.

yup, agree, but

i ref the bookstore thing because

its a kind of subtle disrespect for all of us 'geeks' isn't it?

go in the bookstore and i bet that you will find few other if any categories combined as they do sci fi and fantasy

because all of the other stuff is 'worthy' and 'real literature'

its just the perception that oozes out of those places. they carry tons of sci fi and fantasy titles because they sell, but they hold the readership in low regard.

go in and buy some oversized artsy table book or some obscure piece of 60's philosophy and the clerk will strike up a convo with you!

In real life people don't appreciate how much of an influence an impact star trek has had on our lives and where we have come as a human race. It is responsible for many of the scientific breakthrough that was not possible ever! Whenever I bring up star trek, people frown upon it and call it boring because it doesn't have many explosions and special effects. Jesus christ, that shows how shallow someone is. No sense of selfawareness. No sense of how amazing Star Trek and Science and the Universe we live in is. They act like drones. Just a bunch of organic robots that will continue to add to the wasted gene pool. We won't get another Einstein but then again, there is a co-relation between people having kids to their intelligence. These people don't think about their existence what so ever.

agree with what you say and added to that

a class i took in the psych credits, we learned how 'forensic psychologists (yes, they are always coming up with new fields of employ for themselves!)' believe that many of our brightest inventors and theorists/ thinkers of the past may also not be seen again in new ppl due to the belief that many of these ppl were in fact somewhere in the schizophrenic/ schizo affective arena.
so, many ppl of today who believe they have visions--some which may inspire to great hings, are being medicated into numbness

Prof John Nash is one 20th century example. he did not allow his treatment to interfere with his work and he won the nobel prize for his work in mathematics and differential equations

modern drugs would have squashed that good with the bad

and the 'verdict' on Darwin, besides this qte, some believe he was in a massive depressive state for most of his adult life

if prozac and abilify were around then, would we have had the theory of evolution and his origin of species?

"The current conclusion is that Darwin suffered from several serious and incapacitating psychiatric disorders, including agoraphobia. Agoraphobia is characterized by fear of panic attacks (or actual panic attacks) when not in a psychologically safe environment, such as at home. Darwin, as is common among agoraphobiacs, also developed many additional phobias—being in crowds, being alone, or leaving home unless accompanied by his wife (Kaplan and Sadock, 1990, pp. 958-959"

I actually dreamed of a sci-fi story while I was on my way here. It kinda reminds of the reality we are in. Maybe I should share it one day.

There is nothing "cool" about SyFy packing 90 - 110 minute films with so many commercials that they are stretched to the 3-hour mark. Even worse is that some of the films you listed are longer than 2 hours, which means in SyFy time they will be stretched to upwards of 4 hours airtime. Can't wait for that. :rolleye0014:

Ah! Well I don't actually have access to SyFy and didn't really watch it when I did. No commercials for me. Actually, come to think of it my TV life is pretty much completely commercial free. I don't watch a lot of regular TV. Mostly Netflix, maybe some Kodi now and then but I still prefer downloads over that. Not that I watch a lot of TV or movies in general at the moment. At least not compared to what I used to when I had something on every moment I was home. I feel for you having to watch so many commercials.

Syfy strikes again:

Not surprised! The library of Sharknado movies is actually quite profitable for Syfy, from what I understand. :)

There appear to be a fair amount of people who just like extreme nonsense like that. I've personnally spoken to a few. Not that it's their all-time favourite movie or anything close to that, but they can watch these movies multiple times. I haven't seen any of 'em myself by the way, so technically I couldn't judge, but the whole concept of it puts me off completely right off the bat.

These Sharknado movies are funny as hell! If you liked the Airplane, or Scary Movie series, then Sharknado more than fits the bill. All of them have a theme, and all are really very funny.

Sharknado is insulting as shit. They are operating under the tongue-in-cheek adage of "It's so bad it's good!". But that only applies to works that are done in earnest. That's the whole point of the appeal of "so bad it's good". As a viewer you watch something that the producers sincerely tried to make good but failed miserably and it's in that failure that you find humor and entertainment.

But when it comes to Sharknado it is anything but earnest. It's cynically contrived crap. A drunken clown at a child's birthday party would be more entertaining that this SyFy shitfest. Hell, just watching a promo for one of these Shitnado movies gives me cancer.

Everyone involved in the making of these shit movies should be injected with the Ebola virus and put on an automated container ship with a pre-programmed heading for the South Pole. Hopefully this asshole with the bad hair plugs will be sodomized, repeatedly, on that doomed voyage.
