Tesla/Space x

After many painstaking months of testing, these guys have managed to do this. I realize that NASA is a bit slow compared to these guys, but hey, it's nice to know that they've got this running. Not only are they working on a new car for us, but also satellite internet as well as space x. I hope we see teleportation cracked too.

I am such a huge fan of Space X! Huge fan. Like I used to be for NASA. I stopped being a fan if NASA when they became a bloated, inefficient lame-duck Agency no longer concerned with the advancement of aeronautical pursuits. Space X is far FAR more advanced than NASA, and they want the job. I have toured their facility in Hawthorne CA (close to me), and it is way beyond anything NASA has anywhere in terms of technology and efficiency. Very. Little. Waste. And not much ostentation. At NASA, there is a hierarchy, and the old men have fancy offices with oak desks and lots of awards and stuff on the wall signed by presidents. Big deal. At Space X, you don't see any of that. Everybody works as a team from the bosses to the line workers.

Space X does in a warehouse sized building and perhaps 150 people, what NASA uses hangars the size of several large city blocks and hundreds of people to do. Time to dump NASA. Assign them to something else.

I have actually applied to work at Tesla. Wish me luck :).

Nasa is down to basically old management style that hasn't gotten on with the times. They've been stuck with their old ways and not actually innovating as fast. I still love the people working at NASA because they still put out quality content, but yes you are right. Bureaucracy has claimed the organisation as it does eventually with most large organisations because it becomes impossible to manage at such a large size. It also becomes high inefficient and a lot of wastage is done. It's mostly down to basically putting everything on autopilot. Still, Space X and NASA are working together to achieve this. I was hoping to see a starship enterprise soon with these guys

Space X just needs to becareful of one thing. If there is one thing I have noticed in life is that when something grows very quickly, it has the tendancy to suffer massively and it's not the same anymore and space x and tesla have grown enormously over the past decade. Infact, just have a look at their SP. It has sky rocketed to ridiculous price to over 200 dollars per share. The shareholders must be loving it. Back in 2012 it was worth 34 bucks a share but now it's over 255.

Like Apple, Space X and Tesla come down to the vision of just one man. Elon Musk. And Elon Musk is a genuinely NICE GUY. Everybody who works for him seems to have met him at least once, and they love the guy. A large part of why they like their jobs is because they like Elon Musk. In stark contrast, people working for Apple thought Steve Jobs was a complete dick.

I remember the original Tesla and their little building on Santa Monica Blvd right next to the 405 fwy. They were making the first electric sports car Tesla, but it did not do well then. Tesla still has that building, and they still have one of those sports cars in it's lobby, but it is now a battery servicing center for Tesla autos like the Model S.

I wish you the BEST of luck with your application! I wanted to try for Space X, but it appears that each department has at least one engineer who is also versed in IT skills, with specialists working the server farms and storage networks. Outside of my skillset. :(

Thanks for sharing this @heisenberg !

I loved watching that first video. "Live" footage from all stages of the launch. Truly amazing to see all of that happen within just a matter of minutes really. I was sitting here quietly watching it early in the morning with no one else around, but when I saw that first stage booster make a perfect landing right smack on the center of that landing pad I got chills and couldn't help but say "Wow!". Just wow, that's it. I thought earlier from seeing the animation in the video that the first stage would just end up somewhere in the ocean. If I had shit-tons of money I would so be donating shit-tons of it to Space X. Unfortunately, I do not.

Agreed! And they have done these landings dozens of times, even on a moving platform at sea! It's the stuff of scifi movies. Space X is doing today what NASA said could not be done without more money and research. The entire Saturn V program cost the US trillions of dollars to develop, mostly because of bureaucracy and having to pay the salaries of do-nothing support personnel and researchers.

Landing at sea, even more difficult. Especially on such a tiny platform. I would think you'd make a floating platform of a couple of football fields so it would be more stable and an easier target as well. The very concept of landing a rocket so it can be reused is amazing. They even make it look easy compared to landing a space shuttle. You could probably do this with manned crafts as well.

The platform is a drone. :) It is piloted remotely into place, and communicates with the lander in real time to position itself for the most effective landing. Brilliant. :) NASA could not agree what to serve for snacks at a briefing without it ending up costing millions and resulting in mediocre work.

Ah that's smart making it maneuverable.

I think you're being a bit hard on NASA. Many things Space X does probably wouldn't have been possible without their groundbreaking work.

NASA used to be the shiznit. :) They were trailblazers, and much of the newest technology came from them first, then trickled down into the public sector. They cared about space exploration, new propulsion systems and types of space vehicles. Then, they started experiencing bloat when the military projects started taking precedence. NASA became the place to give people jobs who left the military or graduated from ivy league colleges with science degrees which were not in demand in the public sector. Researchers started naming stars and comets and systems after themselves. Now, it is a shadow of it's former self, and operationally obese. Space X is young and vibrant and creating new ideas. And for cheaper. I was a huge fan of NASA, and now for me Space X is my new hero. :)

when we sent man to the moon the average age at NASA was 27, now it is 51!
