So I thought I dedicate a thread towards the new series. New news just came out of how the Starship might look like. I for one don't like the color. I can't view the video because the video is blocked here

It's called the USS Discovery - NCC-1031

And the name of the newest Star Trek television series is... Star Trek: Discovery, with the show's main ship called the U.S.S. Discovery (NCC-1031). Executive Producer Bryan Fuller revealed the details and debuted the logo today during a standing-room-only “Star Trek 50th Anniversary” panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con.

Fuller -- who in the early morning served fans in line donuts and coffee -- treated Hall H attendees to an exclusive first look video of the test flight of the U.S.S. Discovery, the newest Starfleet ship in the storied franchise’s return to television.

Also worth noting
Star Trek: Discovery is coming to CBS All Access in January 2017, following the premiere on the CBS Television Network, and will be distributed concurrently on Netflix in 188 countries and through Bell Media in Canada.

Okay this looks extremely low budget. Is this a fucking joke? This looks like a fanmade budget production. I have seen better CGI with the fanmade films than this.

My thoughts: NCC-1031 means that this ship pre-dates the USS Enterprise by at least 5 years, and was built after the NX-01 Enterprise. This means after Archer and before Kirk. The wedge shaped hull is too Klingon/Romulan looking to me, and the warp nacelles do not look like warp nacelles but like rockets. They BETTER get that part right. Otherwise, this looks already way better than anything from JJ.

Huh? Please explain (thoroughly) why you feel that way?
I am not judging it fully, but come on this is suppose to be professionally made production. If I wanted to see the CGI done from a 90s game, I would be playing a game from the 90s, but that video production looks extremely low budget and isn't a very good sales pitch if you are trying to sell towards trekkies. That design is also crap.

:) The CGI to me is irrelevant. I absolutely LOVED flashing lights and plywood and models on strings in TOS, so that is really a non-problem. I wont be in it for that. The design of the ship...is shit. :) But not nearly as shitty as the JJ Abrams Enterprise-GT DX which is GIANT.

Low budget means longevity. Trekkies were never about special effects beyond whatever facilitates the storytelling. THAT is where they have to get it right. It has to be about science first, then everything else. It can't be all about the characters and their lives and loves, it has to be about exploration and discovery, and tell us about the crew along the way of that PRIMARY reason for this show to exist. If they get that wrong, it will fail. Promoting this to an article. :)

I am still waiting for CBS to do a better job compared to what they did with Voyager, TNG and Enterprise (yes I liked Enterprise, well the latter seasons)

This looks fan made and even some of the fan made graphics look a lot better tbh. I'll check it out but I don't have high hopes.

It's called balance. The ship doesn't need to jaw dropping pretty but not so damn ugly that I'll make me turn it off. You got to get on with the times too. Trek is about exploration but ultimately I don't want to watch minecraft style graphics here either.

Also worth noting that they cancelled the series 11 years ago lol and used a similar design of the cancelled star trek series Phase two as mentioned by someone on facebook

I think they threw it together because of Axanar, but Axanar did right what this ship does wrong. That ship is a downer for me because the design is distinctly not Federation. But still acceptable to a greater degree than the JJ Abrams Enterprise IMO.

For me, the JJ Abrams Enterprise GT does that. It is so grossly misshapen and festooned with lights and scoops and junk that I can't watch it.

I would have preferred if they continued on past the voyager timeline. I mean they did that when TNG was introduced when Mccoy was introduced in the 1st episode. Scotty made a cameo too and even Kirk himself as well. It's the same thing when Voyager and Deep Space Nine came in so I don't know why CBS is apprehensive.

I don't care about the new trek movies. I won't even bother to waste my money on it. I am talking about in comparison to the trek series that we all grew up with. Perhaps I have been spoiled by expecting greatness from trek, but this is not very promising start.

The best thing about this series is where it is taking place. NOTHING happening in the ridiculous JJ universe is Trek. At least in this series we get the prime universe. They will have the opportunity to destroy this ship, show ships we already know and love, maintain the character of the aliens we know and go places and do things we are familiar with. If they take liberties, it will not be Star Trek. It is all about the substance, not the appearance. It was never about the appearance. The Voyage Home took place on a Klingon warbird and it was still 100% Star Trek.

JJ's Enterprise is style over function. Blingy lights over functional design (within Trek). Those clean, tubular warp nacelles are like that because the warp coils are a straight line of coils along a straight axis. They do not need "accent lights" or bulges and humps. The curved nacelles make no design sense whatsoever, and that fuselage is ridiculous. The only part of it that makes sense is the saucer. Remember, these ships are built in space dock and designed by engineers. It's the difference between these two things:

JJ Mercedes G-wagen style...

blingygwagen.jpg

Normal G-wagen (my style)

No engineer is going to design the top version. That can only come from the dumb end-buyer thinking they can improve the design somehow.

The point being made is that bling is not good. It is juvenile and pubescent. Another example:
