DVR'd the 'first look' ep for S3 last night
Premiere Ep airs 12 June

it was basically most of the first episode with more commercials

we will see the NJ at Vietnam, new strongman in China, Japanese thugs (or maybe govt operators?) and a possibly mutated virus

bad things-far more shipping situations, another 'ho hum' capture of crewmembers and the inclusion of more 'governmental issues'

hopefully the season will be good though

I saw the same preview, and zero shipping was indicated. Aside from that there isn't really enough material to tell how it will be.

Whether people like the premise or not, the near total absence of shipping in the series has been refreshing.

lets see:

Chandler and the American woman in China--talking about their former relationship and "loss"--clearly paving the way for a future 'ship (and just how likely is it that we would have a survivor so talented in asian languages she speaks and understands-so far-Korean,Chinese and Viet--all disparate languages BTW)

The SEAL Lt and his ex LT baby momma is still occurring with great emotion--like his whooping and hollering upon hearing his transfer back home, then her over emotional radio comms for the POTUS to the NJ's

The one NJ LT (i don't remember his name but I'll just say it-the black guy from last year) and the Vietnamese interpreter

and those rowdy sailors on shore leave at the Viet club --ok,those two were after real "quickie" ships but still- this is all melodram, not scifi

BUT DO NOT GET ME WRONG!!! I really do like this show and I hope they keep up the momentum without the intro of "magic babies"-whose hair will blow in a wind that seems to be blowing only for them-or any other number of old hand topes or Deus Ex Machina's

Okay. Now the premiere and episode 2 were aired (postponed last week due to the shootings in Orlando).

They have jumped forward about 5 and a half months from the end of last season. Rebuilding is occurring but going slowly, and the James (and it sounds like some other ships) are carrying the cure overseas. This season looks like it will be focused in Asia, and there seem to be issues getting the cure past strongmen plus also some domestic issues for the new President.

The number of characters with real screen time has been dialed back. No more Dr. Scott, no more Chandler's family, no more computer hacker. The Lieutenant who had the baby is ashore and appears for about 45 seconds talking on the radio. They really have the show focused on being an action thriller with international political shades - a little like 24.

I enjoyed it overall. Still no shipping of note and most of what they show of a military nature is reasonably correct - except for one thing. Chandler is a captain now and they said he declined the promotion to Admiral - CNO (Chief of Naval Operations) is by statute a posting where the occupant is automatically promoted to Admiral, so Chandler should have had no such option. Bugged me a little but not enough to tip a scale.

Two more episodes in and I am enjoying it. They definitely have morphed the show from post-apocalyptic into an action thriller with shades of politics in it. Based on this last episode I am thinking that we will discover that the alliance is not between Peng and the pirates but that there is a pirate mole on his staff. Also that the plague problem is not so much a new strain of the virus as someone distributing phony "cure" modules. And meanwhile the President is starting to see significant domestic blowback both to his policy decisions (like ration books) and also the Asia crisis.

Really if they were going to keep it on the air after they discovered the cure the show had to be morphed and refocused. And so they did.

Nice season so far - another good episode.

As stated upthread, the show has been morphed from its post-apocalyptic roots into sort of a fusion of a Tom Clancy-esque thriller and elements of the old series Jeremiah. It is now more about rebuilding, action, touch of politics. And really it had to change as the original story had run its course.

This episode was a military rescue operation action piece. The hostages (from the opener) were recovered but at a cost. And the appearance of the Chinese Secret Service at the pirate base they supposedly did not know of point more strongly to the notion that either Peng is lying or (my thinking) he has a mole on his staff. Plus the domestic policy issues persist and in addition they whole question of someone passing out phony "cure" modules is rearing its head.

He lived. Not sodomized. Did get beaten, but it was more about using them as human blood banks.

The last two episodes (now I am caught up - was on the road the last week) were good stuff. They did a pretty unexpected left turn in the story that actually works well. This is still not sci-fi - it is as noted upthread a geopolitical thriller. Now we see the real plot unfolding in Asia (basically genocide by means of a chemical weapon that makes people exposed to it unable to benefit from subsequently receiving the cure). And we now have major political intrigue in the US surrounding the suicide of the President - or was it suicide?

Related note - strong ratings lead to Season 4 renewal announced today.

It's also interesting that unlike most shows where their biggest audience number in a season is the premiere then it drops off for The Last Ship it is running in reverse - their lowest number was the premiere and it has climbed consistently all season.

I gave that up in the second season - you are making rethink that....maybe time for a binge watch!

The last installment was both decidedly not action, but very strong as well. It seems the fledgling new US government is in the process of imploding. And the issues it is causing affect Chandler and the crew as well. They are leading up to a more action-ey climax of the season, and part of it I suspect is going to be some type of rebellion or civil war.

Watched the last 4 eps today

not bad-defi picked up from the first 2-3 eps

I don't mind it, I like it actually

just get this pang of remembrance/similarity

the arrest of Chandler and his "trial" scene reminded me of Adama at the trial that his master of arms held in BSG

and the crew vs crew thing, a reminder of the Pegasus vs Galactica issues

and with Kara and her flight from the coup; reminiscent of JERICHO's final season when our two heroes were in flight from Cheyenne to Texas--we even have borders being built like with the division of the US in JERICHO.

Now JERICHO did a bad job (such a show with great potential in S1 what the hell happened?!) with their "exodus" story, the one on LS is very familiar yet somehow done much better.

and with attn to real world military--and I'll give it to them, they did at least mention the unusualness of it in script--but Meynor (the other CPT who lost his Destroyer) getting a double encrypted msg from the WH on a ship where there are two senior officers above him, makes no sense or does it meet with military custom's

same holds true-it would in the army at least--of the female Commander (the ginger haired one) receiving the msg and then giving it to the Meynor without first at least paying a courtesy visit to the actual ship's CPT and the chief of naval ops--both two officers she owes personal loyalty to as well, and letting them know about the msg.
