This has to do with why I changed my Avatar....I will be embarking on a transatlantic ship voyage on December 8th. New York to Southhampton UK on the Queen Mary 2. Ship buffs will understand this as Queen Mary 2 is a true Ocean Liner as opposed to a cruise ship. We'll be on the "northern run" which your normal cruise ship is both too top heavy and insufficiently strongly built to do in safety.

So, I will be in Southhampton Dec 15 and from there to London!

I plan to. Trying to decide if my phone is sufficient for the video needs or if an actual handheld video recorder is called for.

I'm agreeing, I need a legit video camera.

Been out in Thousand Oaks, CA all week but once I get back I need to start some of the prep - like getting my passport current.

I have done my initial questionnaire which is centered in things Medical (any medical conditions, any allergies, special needs, etc.). Dinner on three nights is full formal (suit and tie, ladies formal gowns and dresses) and three nights semi-formal (dress shirt, slacks, jacket but no tie - ladies same level of dressiness).

I also selected which of the two seatings for dinner I wanted each night, basing it on the live entertainment (broadway style shows and such) that night. More to come as I get more into the process.

A GoPro or SJ2000, 3000 or wireless 4000 is lightweight, small and takes excellent video. The main featire is small size and weight.

What do we know about audio on GoPro? As this is a 30 knot ship at sea I am thinking a noise reducing microphone will be essential.

Also, I am starting to read up on the speakers on the voyage as Cunard is famous for its Insights program, where they have prominent experts in different fields speaking live on their transatlantic trips.

So far I have identified speakers in geopolitics, marine architecture and economics. I am still pondering how to fit it all in.

Interesting. :) I probably would rather lay out on a deck chair than listen to a speaker (on any topic). But hey, why not!

Check off passport - that's done now :)

Next step is a proper jacket for ocean travel and walking shoes.

I really admire your thirst for intellectual stimulation. Being on a ship, though, I'm with OM1 on this one. Deck chair, ocean breeze, sun. :D

My ride has just gone into dry dock for a major overhaul that has been planned for over a year:

Cunard is good about keeping their ships in proper repair. They follow a "tick tock" sequence with alternating minor and major overhauls. Queen Elizabeth went in for refit in 2014 and Queen Victoria in 2015 (Cunard operates three ships). This year it is Queen Mary 2.

This resembles how the Navy handles ship refits, except in the Navy it is not a strict minor-major sequence. Submarines for example are refitted on a small scale after every deployment and the big refit comes when whole systems are replaced (or in the day nuclear refueling occurred).

Just make sure the ship's captain isn't Italian. :ronnon_whistling:

Queen Mary 2 is built to a completely different standard than the Costa Concordia. Had QM2 been handled as stupidly as Concordia was, she would have been able to sail away and be repaired. BIG difference between a cruise ship and an ocean liner.
