American non(science)sense

Given the growing (still) belief--or is it an 'anti-belief?'-- by Americans in the importance and consequences of science and what it does for us, I thought I would start a thread for random news, opinions or just "stuff" regarding this American phenomena.

Now, remember. I am no science guru :shame: far from it!

But I do respect and appreciate all that science and scientists do for us.

I mean, how couldn't we?

It is just bizarre how some ppl defend their positions for their nonsensical stances regarding science.

Conversely-it is also very interesting, maybe because of the growing distrust of science in America(?), how some in power use science for their advantage over us in certain 'arenas', like the hype over climate change (yes I believe it is changing--no, I do not believe we can do anything about it) to start whole new industries dedicated to "saving the planet".

So, I thought this was a good video for starters (now I just hope someone fraking comments :) ):

Are you in the United States? What OS and browser are you using?

USA and Firefox with blockers

Here is the same but with more backstory from the host on BoB's nonsense from YT

hopefully you can see it :)

That guy :smiley-laughing021: It's hard to tell is flat Earthers are trolling just for sport or not.

But, anti-science, pseudo-science and the use of conspiracy-science are on the rise. IMO true science is to hard a concept for them to grasp, while the dumb science is easier for them to "get."

Some of these ppl do not even get dumb science

they reject all of it. their version of science is "i don't know why, but when i piss, something makes it go down to the toilet"

and they do not even try to figure that out

That would be the power flushing turlet.
:)
no,no
i mean from their body to the toilet

they probably still ask the 2 yr old's questions "why does my pee go down instead of up or sideways"

or any other basic science question-like why is hot, hot?

I know you meant gravity, even the old(Al Bundy approved Ferguson) gravity flush toilet is being replaced by the power flush turlet

"The term "anti-science" refers to persons or organizations that promote their ideology over scientifically-verified evidence,[3] usually either by denying said evidence and/or creating their own.

If a position or theory is pro-science (aka "science"), as opposed to anti-science, it will follow the scientific method, be potentially refutable, peer-reviewable, reproducible, and open to change if the position comes in conflict with observed fact. An anti-science position will violate one or more of these thresholds, in addition to likely being incoherent. In other words -- is it science?

Anti-science positions are promoted especially when political ideology and/or religious dogma conflict with actual science. While it is highly likely that anti-science positions are the result of ideological positions, it is important to note that holding a particular ideological position does not automatically make an individual guilty of being anti-science, or vice versa.

Common anti-science targets include evolution,[4] global warming,[5], GMOs, and various forms of medicine,[6] although other sciences that conflict with the anti-science ideology are often targeted as well.

While it is frequently associated with conservative political positions, vaccine denialism, alternative medicine (particularly of the Eastern or herbal-based variety), the entire organic food movement, chemophobia, and opposition to a lot of genetic research is associated with the left."<<INTERESTING TO NOTE THE LEFT'S ANTI SCIENCE>>

and here, an example of how "the establishment" uses anti-science to protect their profits and prestige

this Dr has come up with many cures and/or remission instigator therapies that work far better then what the medical industry has or wants you to know about

and he is not the only one using forensic discovery or viral sleuthing to find potential cures for issues like HIV, other viruses and cancers.

<<<in a previous thread I put up a video on how Childrens Hospital in Philly and some other 'mainstream' hospitals were sponsoring research for using virus' to attack and kill certain types of cancers (to include a genetically personalized HIV that attacks cancerous cells). So what have happened to these succesful programs? Perhaps, shuttered, boxed and buried since they would not make as much money long term by curing/remitting as would the traditional, less successful treatments? Anti science practised by corporate greed in effect.>>>

note how he has cured entire nations-albeit small ones with mainly homogeneous populations-of certain contagious disease and HIV

they will continue to trash talk this guy and his methods until there is nothing left of him

While the Rational Wiki is not really respected in the wider world, the cited article was good. However, anti-vaxers, alternative medicine, organic agriculture, chemophobia, and opposition to genetic research are present on the right as well. Ever read Newsmax? It is chuck-full of such notions. Overmind One is an example of someone on the Left who does not believe in Anthropogenic Global Warming, a view that is normally associated with political conservatives.

that why I highlighted in my post "interesting to note the left's anti-science"

i think that a lot of this is based in extreme religiosity, not all of it is.

I think some of stems from conflicting theories in science where ppl today still cite a theory that has been disproved as the best science over something that has either been proven or more workable

like the internal combustion engine powered vehicles were originally selected over those original electric vehicles

there are more things as well

point is, not everyone who is anti science is against science. just another facet of this new phenomena--those who should (and do) know better ally themselves with idiots to make movements

IDK, it seems ok--but what do I know :) ?

Just picked it because it was a "compact" source

Please do put up more stuff

I AM very interested in the "view from outside" of science. Hard to explain how I really enjoy reading or watching a science based show even though I know I do not fully understand all of the principles. But I deny nothing :)
