Spike has made a big move into scripted programming, giving “Red Mars” a straight-to-series order with 10-episodes, Variety has learned exclusively. The hourlong drama marks the cabler’s first original scripted series in nine years.

“Sense8” co-creator J. Michael Straczynski will serve as writer, exec producer and showrunner on “Red Mars.” He will exec produce with “Game of Thrones” co-exec producer Vince Gerardis, who first brought the project to Spike, plus David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross of Skydance Television, which is the studio on the series.

What's it about?

From the link:

“The heart and soul of ‘Red Mars’ is about humanity. This group of strangers must find a way to live together and survive under the most daunting conditions mankind has ever faced to become the first living generation of Martians. They will be each other’s greatest source of strength — and if they can’t coexist — the greatest reason for failure,” said Spike’s exec vice president of original series, Sharon Levy, who will oversee the project, along with Spike’s Ted Gold, Justin Lacob and Lauren Ruggiero.

I like this premise! But to make it work, they are going to HAVE TO get the science right.

I dunno. There's a lot of room for interpersonal melodrama in this scenario. If the writers are any good they will avoid going over the top.

That is precisely what this is going to be, a soap. Only on Mars. But I wouldn't mind it too much if they get the science right and they balance the science with the drama. I envision something like a Little House on the Prairie, but on Mars. There will be a family, no doubt. And at least one smartass kid. And lots and lots of redshirts to die. They can even sneak earth in there easily. With the right balance, it would qualify as science fiction.

Seeing this comes from J. Michael Straczynski, yea it will be melodrama, same as sense8. I tried to watch sense8, got to episode 9 sort of, found I was doing other thing more than watching the show.

Yeah, I think it is a love it or hate it sorta show. I absolutely love it. But I hated it when I first watched it. It took three episodes before I could like it. Did you like Babylon 5? J. Michael Straczynski wrote that too.

I could not get into B5. The movies after the show ended were good.

Don't any of you fucking read? The Mars Trilogy was published between 1992-96, with an additional collection of short stories in '99. They won one Nebula and two Hugos between them, as well as being nominated for at least six other major awards. A lot of the tech he featured was certainly speculative, but overall it's about as hard an SF story as I've ever read.

And yes, I have reviewed them - http://templetongate.net/marstrilogy.htm

It's Spike, home of The Man Show and all things testosterone. I doubt anything with too much melodrama will make its way into a Spike production. :icon_lol:

I just read through the premise of this show . Right off the bat they are going with the they all better get along route or else . Hmmm . Sounds a lot like another show tried that trick and it failed by the third episode for me . It does not look promising but perhaps the fact there on Mars this will deter from from what I hope will not happen and end up with a $hitfest like that other show ...
;) ;) ;)
