So, I didn't see any "dog lovers" thread and I like dogs just as much as cats so...

found this today-what a cool dog.

http://www.lifewithdogs.tv/2015/11/stray-dog-pulls-newborn-from-garbage-dump/

I love dogs too! :) My cat Siete loves them too (but only small dogs). I think dogs are more expressive than cats are, emotionally. I think also that they really care a lot what their humans think of them and their behaviors. I think they are easier to read because their facial expressions are similar to humans when they are in various moods.

You should have titled the thread more simply...like "Dog Lover's Thread" :)

no comment on what this dog did? i think it was pretty freakin amazing

now other dogs have done similar things with older kids, but this was a newborn, cord still attached, that was in a dump

that this dog-a stray!-had the "good sense (IDK is it knowledge?)" to bring it to the first place he knew where humans would be is fascinating

Amazing story (but not surprising). Pets learn that humans are the source of food, water, protection, love...and help. Dogs in particular seem to really NEED human interaction, and they care for human babies by fiercely protecting them from harm. Surprisingly, cats and birds do the same. I sure hope that dog has a forever home now!

I've seen lots of stories like that. Like a retriever that got between a small child and a rattlesnake, which bit it three times as the dog shielded the child with its body. Amazingly the family of the child got the dog to a vet in time and they saved the dog. Which the family kept and treated it like a prince for the rest of its life.

but there are plenty of dogs in that very dump I am sure, that if they had found it, they would have ate it

but in general, I agree-dogs are (can be) very smart and very humane to helpless humans

I love dogs. Oddly enough, a new channel just popped up on Dish network about a week ago called FIDO. It's all about dogs. The only bad thing is the lack of programming on it at this point. They basically rerun old reality shows about police dogs over in England and also one show about a family choosing a puppy. There is a show called "Dogs with Jobs" but it's not much different than the police dog show.

I'm hoping they get more programming soon as I think it's a cool idea for a channel. Fingers crossed it doesn't become just another lousy channel that has ghost stories and aliens and Bigfoot crap.

Something tells me that the stray dog was once a pet.

I always thought this was totally amazing. A border collie who knows every single toy...and there are 1000 of them! This clip with Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

I think I remember hearing that Border Collies are considered the most intelligent of all dog breeds. It would be interesting to find out if they were naturally intelligent before becoming a working breed or if their cognition was enhanced due to the work of shepherding over the years. (The "work" involves being able to operate via hand signals and whistle instructions from their human bosses.)

I don't remember what was considered the dumbest dog though. Probably a Rottweiler. They seem pretty stupid to me. :P

I've had two Border Collies (my present puppy is a Border Collie) and can testify to the smarts. They are crazy smart and also herders so they study your habits and then try to make you keep those habits.

Oh that's right! :beckett_new049:

I don't mind beagles. But if you ever get one be prepared to have it run off a lot. They have a built-in tendency to roam. Although some like to go off on regular routes that circle back home. It's a weird hunting thing that they do. They also "bay" loudly when they've got the scent -- which can be annoying at 3 a.m. on a summer night when they run past your open bedroom window. Don't ask me how I know.

I have said many times here, Border Collies are my favorite dog. :) I have seen them do crazy smart stuff for their owners. Everything from bringing in the morning paper to fetching a ringing cellphone to riding on a surfboard.

LOL. As if they call the shots on the internet? Same video.

ABC hates their videos embedded in stuff. :), and they may go after this uploader.

Anybody remember Lassie? :) She was a collie (long haired breed of the same family as border collies). The show actually featured several Lassies over the years. This particular episode is an example of typical apple pie TV. They are supposed to be a midwest farm family with an impossibly brilliant dog named Lassie, and even more impossibly coiffed and dressed actresses who are supposed to be living on farms. Just LOL! A snapshot of an earlier, more naive society in America.

But, the dog did so many awesome things on that show. :)
