Which is less torture - pouring bleach in your eyes or watching Fantastic 4?

I think you can make a good argument that the bleach may be preferable....

What's there to say? Poorly acted, illogical story and the studio messed the film up so bad the director panned it. Usually Marvel does pretty good but man did they misfire on this....it makes the Jessica Alba Fantastic Four films look sublime by comparison.

It may be that this premise just does not work in a movie format. None of the four really is an interesting character outside of their powers, which makes any extended exposure to them start to get boring. And once they get together and start fighting crime it turns into "Generic Superhero Team". I think the Avengers worked better because they actually have some personality on an individual level.

On the upside, this probably means an end to the F4 franchise. :encouragement:

I too have not heard a single good thing about the movie, Even Mrs GF, who is a total sucker for these kinds of superhero movies as said she will give it a pass. (And let's face it, her taste is already questionable, she married me)

It's not strictly speaking a marvel film though is it? Doesn't someone else besides Disney/Marvel own the rights to F4?
All the Disney films have been great, not because I think Disney is good, but because they seem to be taking a pretty "hands off" approach to these movies and trusting marvel studio's with shitloads of cash.

I think this was also a risk with the first X-men movies, Prof X, Scott, Storm and Jean -really- are not all that interesting until they added the outsider perspective of Wolverine into the mix and made the stories more form his perspective. I have not seen it, but if you have Joe, do you think they could have done something similar with the Thing? F4 are the "first family of superhero's", But Ben is a friend and could provide that outsider perspective, even from within the team.

I think the Avengers worked because you already had full origin stories set up for Iron Man, Thor and Cap (which is your personality aspect), plus fanbases already baked into 3 pretty major characters which made people just -want- to see them togeather. The initial fight/meeting of Tony, Thor and Cap was so well executed, and chock full of funny, if somewhat cheesy lines, that it just -worked-, and cemented them as a group of "powers" in a way that is hard to replicate.

Same could be said of Guardians to an extent. Star Lord is the "outsider" playing in a universe he rightly should not be in and the whole movie has the tone of the dysfunctional group of "friends" just trying not to get killed and saving the galaxy as a "by the way" and it just "works"

Your wife chose well. Give yourself some credit! You are a pretty interesting fellow. :)

Disney is providing resources like money and production crews and other stuff, but it is not Marvel-centric like the Avengers. 20th Century Fox and Marvel are doing this together.

They needed to keep Wolverine with X-men and not bust him out on his own IMO. Same with Captain America (whom I do not find interesting at all)

Good points.

I guess it comes down to why Fantastic Four has never seemed to work while Guardians of the Galaxy worked spectacularly well. What comes to mind:

- FAR better written characters that the audience can actually care about. This is probably the key. As written the Fab Four are next to impossible to feel any empathy with, care about or identify with. The Guardians on the other hand ALL are pretty easy to feel empathy towards and care what happens to them. And credit for that has to go to James Gunn who wrote the script as well as directed.

- The Guardians do not have super powers. Just a speculation here but could the lack of super powers make them easier to identify with?

BINGO! They are alien, but they do not have super powers (well...Groot kinda has them). I think I like them because they are funny and the familiar music in it is a HUGE plus.

I would also point to the actors as well. The cast was -very- well chosen for GotG, to the point where you could all but take frame by frame shots and transplant them directly onto a comic book page. The stances, the expressions etc just fit togeather that way. (which gives credit to the cinematography as well. Another good example of what I mean is Blade (the first one), If you ignore the crappy script and look at how Wesley Snipes poses and carries himelf as blade, it too would look like snapshots from a comic book. It's probably rather subliminal for most people, but if you read a lot of comics or graphic novels, you can notice it pretty easily.

I would say yes to that. Probably the 2 most meh main characters of X-men are Scott and Storm, who also have the "flashiest" powers. I think in the minds of the GP, superhero's are more Scifi in nature, and adding "magic" to them may be jarring for them as they see that as more a part of fantasy.
Just a thought as well.

Next Fantastic Four Film Reboot Might Be A Kids Movie
Like Spider-Man and the X-Men, the Fantastic Four is one of Marvel's key superhero properties whose movie rights are owned by a different studio--in this case, Fox. To date, the studio has made two different film versions of the classic team, but following the failure of 2015's Fantastic Four, it has been unclear what the future holds for the property. It has now been reported that it might be rebooted as a family-friendly film.

Who the hell is giving the green signal to greenlit this piece of shit franchise? As if the reboot movie wasn't bad enough, they are now wanting to keep beating this dead horse
