What would your "dream computers" be?

I was just thinking on how Apple fans buy their Macs for reasons more emotional than reasoned (probably why the brand loyalty is strong, for some bizarre reason they are emotionally invested in the product).

What would YOUR dream machines (desktop and laptop) be?

Me, for a desktop I would either want to build my own or let Falcon Northwest go nuts with me personally there to see it built. Remember I have a sort of affection for the PC boutiques because to me they are real craftspeople as opposed to assembly line production.

For a laptop, don't laugh, I always wanted my own ThinkPad. Ever since I used one on the job nearly 20 years ago I just loved the idea of a laptop so sturdy you could use it to beat someone to death then turn it on and do other things. I have kept up on them (borrowing and trying and such) so I know that build quality and the legendary ThinkPad typing experience are still there. However, their need to appeal to the enterprise always meant it was hard to get one that was really tricked out.

I guess you could say I have a bit of an a emotional link to boutique PCs and ThinkPads...

Keep this up and you and I are bound to become besties for life.

Joe! Im tellin....:rotflmao:

The first ThinkPad I ever used was a ThinkPad 800 and I remember being struck at how much it resembled the military-grade computers which were showing up in the early 1980s. I did not have my first PC until 1994

Speaking of beating someone to death.....

One that I could have sexual congress with and not have to talk after...

I would want a light, speedy, and easily transportable computer (no mac's). Also, one with a very good writing tool so I could have electronic copies of my notes. Never really had/have a desire for a 'dream computer'.

Your dream machine sounds rather like a Surface Pro.

I am a poor, overworked grad student. I don't think I can afford the latest thing, maybe an older version. I actually need to buy a new laptop more than anything, and I think I can find ones around the 300-600 range that can serve my needs. I don't really like the apps layout that almost all tablets have.

Im getting to the point where I am shopping only capabilities (and reliability) now, instead of brands or specific pieces. This means that "computer" has taken on a new meaning for me. I want an ultra high speed processing unit with lots of RAM and high end video capabilities. It should have massive data storage which can be accessed as fast as possible. With that, I can install a virtual host (Hypervisor) and run several high speed, high graphics VMs from wherever I need them.

AND, I want it to be the size of a shoebox. :anim_59:

It's a decent SSD. What are you planning to install it into?

Was reading about how adding (cloning) an SSD to your computer would make it super fast. (I admit to having no idea what's already in this glorified tablet that I'm using right now.) This Samsung one is being touted as all that and then some for being only $99. What say you folks? :daniel_new004:

I have that EXACT drive in my old 2008 unibody MacBook Pro. Cloning the original 250 to the Samsung 850 using Clonezilla was a snap, and the performance improvement is more than 100%, along with the 8gb upgrade in RAM. I highly recommend it. :)

Not sure I'm going to install it in anything yet as, truthfully, I don't know much about it. I figured you guys would give me the low-down on how good an SSD is. Also, this one is relatively cheap from what I understand.

Do you use an SSD in your computer(s)?

SSDs provide a pretty big performance jump because they have VERY fast I/O (Input/Output) times which are a key bottleneck on performance.

That said, it is also important to know what the machine you want to use an SSD with is, to make sure that what you buy is compatible (has the right connections).

I use SSDs in mine - they were well worth it.

I am waiting for someone to get me quantum computers up and running. We are getting close to it, but when we do get one running, it will remove the standard box we are using now. No doubt they will be crazy expensive at the start but they will eventually get cheaper.
https://cosmosmagazine.com/technology/breakthrough-quantum-computers

The current computer tech has bored men though. Haswell/ivybridge has been boring and don't bring in any raw performance gain we got with previous generations and even then, software is taking forever to catchup to hardware and only a few apps really use the horse power. Games are being forced to be console ports. Not to mention, AMD aren't even bothering to compete anymore. We are also getting very tiny and it's going to be hard to fit so many transistors so I don't know where conventional computers will be especially with the whole mobile craze and how expensive CPUs/GPus are getting with each new generation.
I use SSDs in mine - they were well worth it.
SSDs are great for performance but storage wise, relative to their price, they stink. Not knocking SSD. I like the tech but it's too damn pricey still.

How much dream are we talking?

In pure dream, I want one with 2 TB Hard drive, 12G Ram, Hard core gaming vid/audio specs, I want it convertible but not a tablet. I want my monitor portion to float above at perfect eye level. I want it stretchable for as big or small as I want. I want my keys on keyboard to expand for comfort as a type. I want NO spyware of any kind allowed on it by computer ( like it auto rejects it all), same goes for malware, worms, trojans, adware, you name it...all gone, poof by my reliable computer. I want it to weigh like a feather and shrink to phone size for transportation when not in use. I want it to run on a battery that needs charging once a year or never. I want it to be windows 7 and I want it to never overheat or break down. Finally, I want it to have 5 VPNs running and yet never slow down my speed.

For now, I would be happy in RL with same spec gaming computer, 15:6 is my fav size, Windows 7, lightweight, pink, I might try an Alienware.
