Would cannibalism attract viewers to SGU?

Kind of an expansion of a post I made under "SGU: The search for Food".

The basic notion was to put a new ending on "Aftermath" where Young brings back Riley's body to Destiny. Then the next day everyone is pleasantly surprised to have meat with their gruel. Rush asks Young where the meat came from and gets a faint grin - roll credits.

After all, they keep saying SGU is supposed to be darker and edgier - wouldn't cannibalism take them closer to that place? It would even add a sense of "mystery" to parallel Rush's having secretly found the bridge - what's Young up to in the Galley???

Plus it would give all those longing glances we constantly have the characters share a whole new dimension. What sort of desire is it? Romantic? Or culinary? Plus it would add a whole new dimension to the Drama the next time they need food, and maybe they don't find any on the planet they come to. Also when they use the stones they need to cover up their new food source so the SGC and NOA don't find out.....

Why not? They have had a couple of excellent movies which included cannibalism for survival, and yes that is about as dark and gritty as you can get. Where is the protein coming from to nourish these people? Since there have been no aliens to speak of, and no lifeforms other than plant life on those dreary planets where Destiny is, this is a real scenario!

LOL!

Actually, it could be done. After all, there are many instances in human history where people had to do it to survive, and if they had any sense at all (the crew or the writers) this would already have been brought up. An open airlock would be the perfect freeze-dryer.

Instead they conjure up alien veggies. How lame is that? As mentioned in the "food" thread, that's not even decent scifi. They neatly addressed the real concerns that people would have in this kind of situation in the first few episodes, e.g. "Air" and "Water"... in order to focus on the crappy interpersonal dramas. That's where they crossed the line into soap. The drama should be ABOUT food, air and water.

This is what I meant when I posted in the sexism thread that the show is not half as edgy as TPTB think it is. Cannibalism is a very real possibility, and definitely would draw viewers, but instead they ignore it and all the other great story possibilities. I think they're just lazy.

You know, there are so many ways to die out there- anytime someone dies from being shot it's a sure sign of a sheer lack of imagination!

I think I would have actually watched it for a bit of cannibalism.

In fact I may even pay good money to watch Rush mopping up Chloe's gravy. :)

They should have made preparations to find some butter, and some lemon, to have a fish fry of epic proportions, when the Fish Aliens made an appearance. All is not lost, since there's a chance that Chloe might turn into one.

Yick. That nasty smell and overly fishy taste might be too much, even for a douchebag like Scott.

When the subject came up, longtime Python fan that I am, I just couldn't resist looking this up.

And tonight's episode would have presented more cannibalistic opportunities

Just adding some little subtle "moments" could have created new dimensions that could have helped a pretty bad episode:

For example, after TJ has her silly wresting match with the LA guy near the start she simply stops, stares at him and licks her chops....

When Varro is asking Young when he will give them their freedom Young stares at him and says "it's either stay in here or go, one at a time, to the galley". When Varro starts to say that the galley does not sound that bad, Young just faintly grins.

When Telford is surrounded by aliens near the end, he says to himself "I hope you are better than Riley was..do I have any salt?"

And when Rush disappears during the episode (again), Young tells Eli "I swear if Rush doesn't stop wandering off we'll have appetizers soon".

See how it adds new layers to the characters and storyline?

I was a kid when I first started listening to Monty Python albums. I've lost count of how many I had. It was long enough ago that they were (GASP!) vinyl.

Another Monty Python Record/Monty Python's Previous Record is very likely my favorite album. It was a two record set. ;)

I'd buy that for a dollar!

And as ratings desperation sets in....

How long will it be until SGU turns to cannibalism to get the viewers? Then they can brag of being "darker and edgier" than even the reimagined BSG, which never had the colonials turn to this.

They can even work the stones in as the means by which Earth discovers that the Destiny crew are practicing "new and innovative" culinary techniques....
